PricewaterhouseCoopers Magoebaskloof Cycle Challenge

This past weekend we headed to Tzaneen for the Magoebaskloof Cycle Challenge. On our way to the race we drove down the Magoebaskloof pass that we had to race over the next day. We knew that this climb was going to split the field in pieces and decided not to do too much in the race before the climb which was around the 40km mark.

It was a small race and all the 100km race participants started together. A group of men broke away early. As none of the Nashua girls were in the break I decided that it would be better not to waste energy to try and bridge the gap and just stayed in the group containing all the main competitive girls.

After the 12km it was only me, Jade and five Nashua girls left in the group. Jade attacked 5km before the big climb and Nashua rider, Sarah Chemaly, went with her. I was happy with the break.

The Nashua ladies kept attacking me all the way to the climb but I decided to just ride at my own tempo and then try to bridge the gap to Jade on the climb.

We hit the base of the climb and all of the Nashua ladies that was in my group dropped off the pace. Sarah Chemaly, who was in the break with Jade, also dropped and I caught her 1km into the climb. I caught up with Jade halfway up the climb and just kept going at my own pace not knowing how far back the Nashua ladies were.

At the top of the climb it was me and a veteran rider and I sat on his wheel for a few kilometres to give Jade time to come across. Not knowing how much time I had on the Nashua ladies I decided to just keep going. The veteran rider dropped me on a downhill section and it was a hard and lonely 35km time trail to the finish.

Jade had a 50km time trail to the finish and still finished in second place. Although it was not the most competitive race that I have ever done it was by far the toughest course that I have done here in South Africa. It was a good confidence builder for the team going into the bigger races later this year.

This weekend we will be racing the Century 21 Bela Bela Challenge. Yolandi will travel down to the Geytown Mountain Bike Festival.
