10th Caltex Sunny Hill

A few days after arriving in sunny South Africa from the slightly cooler climate of England me and Arien rode the season opener for Bloemfontein, 2 x 49km circuits starting and finishing at Sunny Hill. With Arien pointing out the dangerous parts we were both riding near the front of the big bunch to stay out of trouble and go with the attacks. We covered a few early moves then about 10km in I jumped into a break which quickly became 5 riders and we moved clear of the group. 2 of the riders then broke away and dangled in front of the 3 of us until 2 more riders came across and we caught the lone riders ahead. With three riders from Wiehahn, a strong local team, myself and 3 individual riders in the break it was a perfect number to work well and move away from the chasers. With Arien doing a fine job of shutting down attacks from the main group we moved gradually up to three minutes clear. Everyone worked and only once was I a bit bossy when riders started attacking and sitting on with over 50km still to go and only a minute clear at that point.

The course was fairly wearing with a number of drags and windy open roads and into the finish everyone seemed content with a bunch sprint whereas I was expecting the Wiehahn team to constantly attack us. Two tandams caught us in the last few km s which made the finish pretty hectic and fast. I came across the line 3rd (excluding one of the tandems) along with one buckled wheel and a missing spoke…think I could disappear down some of the South Africa’s potholes!! The winner was Francios Oosthuizen.

Arien unfortunately punctured in the second lap and with no spare wheel had to pull out. The race was an aggressive, hard season opener, everyone was extremely friendly and welcoming, the Specialized Tarmac bike feels responsive and light and the sun tan is coming along…these are the days which make all those cold wet winter hours worth it.
